How ALTON works
Every lesson follows four steps, so you can tell the difference between hearing an idea and using it.
ALTON is in beta. Full lessons are available for 3 skills today, and more are added over time. Practice, review, vocabulary and practice tests are available beyond those lessons.
Learn a small concept
A short explanation on a worked example.
Try it with guidance
You choose the next move and the reason, with support when you need it.
Solve a new problem on your own
New problems with no hints, so you see what you can do alone.
Check it again later
A few days later, new problems on the same skill. A miss shows what to practice next.
Try one moment from a real lesson
This preview comes from a lesson on removing parentheses. Predict, compare, then judge. It works without an account, and nothing you do here is saved.
- Predict
- Compare
- Judge
3(x + 2) 3x + 2
Will 3(x + 2) and 3x + 2 give the same result?
Make a guess first. There is no wrong answer here.
Preview only. Nothing is saved, and it does not count toward your free study days or any record.
Inside ALTON
A plan built around your test date
Tell ALTON your exam date and target score. Your plan is a list of study days, and Today shows what to do next.
Miss a day? Unfinished learning moves to the next day. Nothing is lost.
Your target score is a goal you set. ALTON does not predict your score.

Review
Questions you miss come back for another try, and finished lessons come back for a later check.

Vocabulary
Save words while you study, review them, and make your own word quizzes.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to sign up?
You can try the lesson preview on this page without an account. To take the diagnostic, study with a plan, and save your progress, create a free account.
Do I need a card?
No. Signing up and using the free part does not ask for a card and never charges you automatically.
What is free?
When you sign up: your diagnostic (once), study days 1–3, and one full-length practice test. A study day is a day of learning in your plan, not a 72-hour countdown, so you take each one when you are ready.
Can I choose my daily study time?
Yes. In your plan settings you can choose 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1 hour 30 minutes, or 2 hours a day. The default is 30 minutes. It is a planning limit for how much a study day includes, not a timer, and you can change it later. Days you have already started keep what they have; the change applies to days you have not started.
Can I skip what I already know?
Sometimes. Where a lesson offers it, you can choose “I already know this” at the start and take a check of new problems, with no explanation first. It is offered only for lessons that have enough verified check problems; for the others, the lesson simply starts from the beginning. If you pass, that lesson is recorded as passed by a check. This is stored separately from finishing the lesson, and it does not mean you have mastered the skill.
What if I miss a day?
Nothing is lost. Unfinished learning moves to the next day, and nothing in your plan is cut short because you were away.
Does my plan change on its own?
No. If ALTON suggests a change to later days, it shows the reason and what will change, and it happens only after you accept. Days you have started are never changed.
What do “Learned” and “Solved on your own” mean?
Learned: You finished the lesson. The skill list shows this as “Lesson complete”. It does not mean you have mastered the skill.
Solved on your own: You answered new problems correctly without help.
Check again: A recent answer suggests this skill is worth another look.
Not enough evidence yet: Not started, or too few new problems to say anything. It does not mean the skill is weak.
ALTON keeps these apart on purpose. Finishing a lesson is not the same as being able to solve new problems.
What is the invited beta?
A beta for invited people only. Accounts invited by email get free access to the general paid SAT learning features, with no card and no automatic billing. No end date is set yet, and we will give notice before it ends. A regular sign-up is not part of the beta.
Is ALTON an official College Board service?
No. ALTON is not affiliated with or endorsed by College Board. SAT is a registered trademark of College Board.
